“He must increase, but I must decrease.” John 3:30
John the Baptist. His main role was to prepare THE WAY and get out of the way.
Our problem is that we think we must be the “MORE” or be the “MESSIAH.” But God is wanting us to be less so He can be the more.
I have been guilty way to long of thinking I have to be an “over doer” or an “over achiever” … and really, all I have done was step in God’s lane.
When you are driving in the wrong lane, what inevitably happens? You hold up traffic!
What happens when you and I get in God’s lane? We hold up the flow He is trying to work in.
We must get out of God’s lane and stay in our own lane.
Does doing less mean we do nothing? NO.
Does doing less mean that we are lazy? NO.
Doing less simply means we do our part, so God can do His part!
1 Corinthians 3:5-8 NLT “After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow.
It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work.”
THE WHOLE STORY
John 3:26-30 NLT “So John’s disciples came to him and said, “Rabbi, the man you met on the other side of the Jordan River, the one you identified as the Messiah, is also baptizing people. And everybody is going to him instead of coming to us.” John replied, “No one can receive anything unless God gives it from heaven.
You yourselves know how plainly I told you, ‘I am not the Messiah. I am only here to prepare the way for him.’ It is the bridegroom who marries the bride, and the bridegroom’s friend is simply glad to stand with him and hear his vows. Therefore, I am filled with joy at his success.
He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.”
I wonder what would happen if we would decide today not to try to be God.
I am not saying you are walking around claiming you are God. But our actions sometimes say something our lips do not.
What does all this mean?
If we try to control things or achieve things, our actions prove that we are playing God’s role.
He’s calling us to BE LESS. Be more intentional with our words. Focus less on getting things done and more on getting the RIGHT things done. Instead of rushing through life, He’s calling us to slow down.
Maybe it’s doing more listening than talking. Maybe it’s taking time to help a neighbor, instead of rushing throughout the day. Maybe it’s creating enough margin in our lives that we can invest both our time and treasure in something that will make a lasting impact. Maybe it’s taking the time to BE STILL and reflect on Him and His goodness every day.
Be less today.
